The University of Louisville basketball team finished 2012 off with a stellar performance against Tennessee State on New Years Eve. The 11th-ranked Cardinals shot a blistering 56% from the field while holding the visiting Lady Tigers to just 17% and rolled to an easy 88-25 victory.
The 25 points allowed tied a school record for fewest points, equaling a mark set against Centre College in 1977.
"That's kind of a big deal," said point guard Shoni Schimmel, who scored 12 and dished out 7 assists.
Coming off a lengthy break, the Cardinals displayed no signs of rust. Jeff Walz's team raced to a 23-0 lead to start the game, which set an arena record for consecutive unanswered points to begin a game.
Sophomore Sara Hammond recorded a double-double, her second of the season, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Sheronne Vails also notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Monique Reid scored a season best 20 points, while sophomore Bria Smith led the team with 4 steals.
