Coming off a 5th place finish at the Maui Invitational, Marquette returned back home to the BMO Harris Bradley Center and defeated University of Maryland-Baltimore County by a final score of 88-88 on Monday night.

The Golden Eagles were without Vander Blue who was inactive after suffering a sprained left knee in the final game of the Maui Invitational against USC where he was also named to the all-tournament team.

Defended former MU recruit Brett Roseboro

Jamil Wilson led the scoring charge for Marquette as one of three Golden Eagles to score in double figures. Wilson had a game-high 18 points and also grabbed 6 rebounds in the process. Davante Gardner added 13 points and 5 steals while Jake Thomas poured in 12 points. Marquette also assisted on 28 of their 31 baskets.

UMBC kept it close in the first half trailing 28-24, but Marquette finally found it’s shooting touch in the second half en route to the victory. Marquette outscored UMBC 51-22 in the final 20 minutes and shot 71.4% in that half. UMBC finished the game struggling to shoot ball going 33.3% from the field.

Marquette’s bench was extremely productive on the night accounting for 39 of the Golden Eagles’ 79 total points scored. Freshman Steve Taylor Jr was impressive scoring career-highs with 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Chase Plummer led the UMBC Retrievers with 12 points on the evening.

Marquette next plays 7th ranked Florida on Thursday at 8pm in the SEC/Big East Challenge in Gainesville. It will be the first nationally ranked opponent that Marquette will face this season and their Sweet 16 opponent from a year ago.

The game attendance was announced at 12,679 but the student section lower bowl was hardly full. Marquette fans shouldn’t have to worry though drawing numbers for their next home game as the rival Wisconsin Badgers visit Milwaukee on Saturday.
